Texas leads the nation in alcohol-related traffic deaths with more
than 1,700 in 2002
As a percentage of all traffic fatalities, Texas ranks
ninth-highest at over 40%
The number of DWI arrests in Texas was 90,899 in 2002, down 1.8%
from 2001
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety in 2002, of
those arrested in the state for DWI, 86% were male
Regarding the ethnic breakdown of these arrests, 51% were
White/non-Hispanic, 42% were Hispanic and 6% were African-American
12% of those arrested were under the legal age to purchase
alcohol.
State Bill 45, passed Sept. 1 2003, makes it a state jail felony
to drive while intoxicated with a passenger younger than 15.
